Art helps man with learning disabilities to express himself

Latymer house artistA man with learning disabilities supported by care provider Regard in Redhill has found success by expressing himself through art.

David Worsfield, who lives at Latymer House supported living service, has been taking art classes at the local YMCA for the past two years and has been producing such high quality oil paintings he is now being encouraged to stage a local exhibition later this year.

Asrun Kolbrunardottir, service manager at Latymer, said the classes are just one of the ways Regard supports people to live life to the full.

Another service user at Latymer, Diane Randall, is engaging with the community in a different way by providing representing the service at the housing association board meetings, which are held two or three times each year.

Commenting about both residents’ success, Kolbrunardottir said: “David has agreed we can display his work at the service and we’re privileged to have several of his paintings on show in the lounge, hall and some of the bedrooms where everyone can enjoy them.

“Such a talent has been uncovered through these classes – I’m really hoping David might decide to share his work with the local community with an exhibition next year, but he won’t make any commitments at the moment. We’ll have to wait and see.

“Meanwhile, Diane has dementia and learning disability, but she tells the housing association what has been going on, and passes on any complaints or suggestions for improvements she’s collected from other tenants, and then feeds back any news from the housing association at our own house meetings.”

Latymer House specialises in supporting people who have previously lived in a residential setting or within the family home.
