People with learning disabilities celebrate achievements at awards ceremony

CMG awardsThe achievements of people with learning disabilities have been recognised at an awards ceremony held by Care Management Group (CMG) in London recently.

Individuals, and their families, supported by care provider celebrated their successes over the past year at the ceremony, which took place in the Copthorne Tara Hotel in Kensington.

Winners included The Brelade Players – a drama group which performed at the House of Commons – who took home the Most Inspirational Group award.

Stephen Barnett, one of the Brelade Players, also won third place for ‘Most Inspirational Individual’ and there wasn’t a dry eye in the house when Stephen went up to collect his trophies. Stephen has had three major heart operations in the past nine months but still took to the stage with the sketch group and has achieved amazing progress while maintaining a positive spirit.

“Thank you for inviting me to the awards ceremony, the food and drinks were amazing and I had a great evening!” said Stephen. “The hotel was swanky and posh! I loved it! I’m glad I had the chance to say my speech and thank everyone that supported me over the last year.”

This is the second year the awards ceremony has been held. The idea came from CMG’s Service User Parliament, a forum for residents of CMG services to discuss important issues and give feedback to the management through their elected regional representative.

After a drinks reception, CMG’s chief executive Peter Kinsey announced the nominees for 11 different awards, including Best Achievement in Paid Employment, Best Achievement in Education and Most Inspirational Individual, before the awards were presented by Sir William Wells, chairman of CMG.

“We were delighted to hold the Service User Awards for a second year,” said Kinsey. “They recognise the incredible achievements of the people that matter most. Our goal is always to empower service users to achieve their ambitions and these awards are a great demonstration of this.”
