A Nottinghamshire man with Down’s syndrome has been elected to his local parish council, which is believed to be a first in the UK.
Councillor Stephen Green, 47, was recently elected as member of Nuthall Parish Council in Nottinghamshire after his predecessor, Cllr Paul Simpson, stepped down. His election was unopposed after nobody stood against him.
It was the second time Green had stood for election to the council. He was narrowly beaten in an election 8 years ago.
He will be accompanied at future meetings by his father and carer, Grenville
Green is a member of Kimberley and Nuthall Churches Mens Breakfast Club where he helps prepare and cook meals, and also mentors students with disabilities at a local college. He also recently gave a piano recital at Kimberley’s Holy Trinity Church.
