This working paper presents the views of 12 disabled young people regarding their interactions with the education system, the Department for Work and Pensions, support services and third party organisations as they come to the end of their education and start the process of seeking and gaining work. The work was conducted in response to a request from the Office of Disability Issues (ODI) to enable them to further understand the experiences of customers aged 18-26 years with a physical or learning disability, to form part of the evidence base being used to support the development of a new disability strategy.
This was a small-scale qualitative study undertaken by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) Insight team. The evidence was gathered through 12 face to face interviews during March 2012.
The paper includes findings structured in two key areas – by the broad themes identified through analysis and as a series of journey maps which show the interactions and impacts on individuals of key events and processes in their own words.
